What We're Building: A Look at What's Coming in ReelIQ
We've been heads-down building ReelIQ, and we wanted to pull back the curtain on what's coming. If you've been following along, you know the core idea: a private, AI-powered fishing logbook that runs entirely on your iPhone. But the feature set has grown well beyond a simple logbook, and we think anglers are going to be excited about what's taking shape.
Here's a look at what we're actively building and refining.
AI Species Identification — Three Tiers Deep
We didn't want species ID to be a gimmick. So we built a three-tier system that gives you the best possible result depending on your situation.
The first tier uses on-device AI, which runs entirely on your iPhone. It's fast, private, and doesn't require an internet connection. The second tier checks against iNaturalist, a trusted online nature database with millions of species observations, using your location to improve accuracy. The third tier uses built-in image recognition as a final backup.
You'll see a confidence score with every identification, and you'll know which method was used. If the AI isn't sure, you can always pick the species manually.
7-Day Personalized Fishing Forecast
This is one of the features we're most excited about. Most fishing forecasts are generic — they apply to everyone in a region the same way. Ours is different.
ReelIQ analyzes YOUR catch history to figure out your ideal conditions — your best temperature range, wind speed, barometric pressure, moon phases, and weather patterns. Then it pulls the real 7-day forecast from the National Weather Service and scores each day 0-100 based on how closely it matches your personal patterns.
The best day of the week gets highlighted automatically. It's not a guess — it's built from your own data.
Solunar Calendar with Catch Correlation
We've built a full solunar calendar that goes beyond just showing moon phases. It calculates major and minor feeding periods for your location, displays them on a 24-hour visual timeline, and rates each day on a 1-5 star scale.
But here's the part that makes it actually useful: ReelIQ tracks what percentage of your catches occurred during feeding periods. Over time, you'll see whether solunar theory actually holds up for the species and waters you fish. Real data, not just theory.
AR Fish Measurement
We're using augmented reality to let you measure your catch right through your camera. Point your phone at the fish, tap the head, tap the tail, and the measurement auto-fills into your catch log. It's fast, surprisingly accurate, and one of those features that feels like the future once you use it.
Live Activities and Dynamic Island
When you start a fishing trip in ReelIQ, it shows up on your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. You'll see your catch count, last species caught, elapsed time, and current weather — all without opening the app. Log a catch during the trip and the Live Activity updates in real-time.
This is one of those iOS-native features that makes the app feel deeply integrated with your phone, not just another app running in the background.
Home Screen Widgets
We're building widgets in small and medium sizes. The season stats widget shows your total catches, species count, biggest catch, and current streak. The last catch widget gives you a quick glance at your most recent catch. Both update automatically as you fish.
Expanded Statistics and Charts
The stats dashboard has grown significantly. You'll be able to see:
- Species breakdown and catch distribution
- Top baits and lures, including best bait per species
- Most fished waters and which ones produce best
- Best time of day, best moon phase, best weather conditions
- Monthly trend charts showing your progress over time
- Personal bests per species with weight and length records
- Average weight by species to track whether your fish are getting bigger
All of this is generated from your own data. No generic advice — just what actually works for you.
What's Still on the Roadmap
We're also working on a few things that aren't quite ready to show yet:
- iCloud Backup and Sync — Optional cloud backup through Apple's encrypted infrastructure so your data is safe and can move between devices. Your data, Apple's encryption, and we never see it.
- Additional customization — More options for custom species, baits, techniques, and water bodies so the app works for any style of fishing, anywhere.
- Refined onboarding — Making the first-launch experience even smoother so you can be logging catches within seconds of downloading.
Built for Privacy from Day One
Everything we build starts with a simple question: can we do this on-device? The answer has been yes for almost everything. Your catches, photos, GPS data, analytics, and AI-generated insights all stay on your iPhone. The only time data leaves your device is when you choose to share a catch or when the cloud-based species ID fallback is triggered.
No account required. No sign-up wall. No servers collecting your spots.
When Can You Get It?
We're getting close. We're in the final stages of polish and testing. When ReelIQ hits the App Store, we want it to feel complete — not like a beta you're helping us test. Stay tuned for launch updates, and thanks for following along.
